Scale finder

Pick a root and a scale type to see its notes, degrees, and shape on a piano keyboard. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

Pick a root note and a scale type and see exactly which notes the scale contains, numbered by degree and highlighted on a piano keyboard. It covers the everyday scales and more: major and the three minors, all seven modes (Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and the rest), plus the major and minor pentatonics and the blues scale. The notes are spelled correctly for the key, so a scale reads with one of each letter where it should.

Seeing the notes laid out on the keyboard makes the pattern obvious and easy to play or memorize, whether you are practicing, writing a solo, or working out a melody. The scale is computed in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Example. A major shows A - B - C# - D - E - F# - G#. Switch to E minor pentatonic and you get E - G - A - B - D, lit up across the keyboard ready to play.

FAQ

Which scales are included?

Major (Ionian), natural, harmonic, and melodic minor, all the modes - Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian - and the major pentatonic, minor pentatonic, and blues scales.

Why are some notes sharp and others flat?

A scale is spelled so that each letter name is used once where possible, which is why A major uses C# and F# rather than Db and Gb. The finder applies the correct spelling for the key you choose.

What is the keyboard for?

The piano diagram highlights the notes of the scale so you can see the shape at a glance and find them on a real keyboard. It makes the intervals between the notes visual rather than just a list.

Does it run offline?

Yes. The notes are calculated in your browser, so the scale finder works offline and nothing is uploaded.
